Almost every complaint about accuracy in a home shop can be traced to the surface underneath the work. These are the checks and the corrections, in the order worth doing them.

Check for twist and flatness first

Lay a long straightedge across the top in several directions and look for daylight. Use feeler gauges to measure the gap rather than judging it. Then check for twist with a pair of winding sticks sighted across the ends.

Corrections, from least to most disruptive:

  • Shim the legs and level the base, which fixes rocking but not twist in the top.
  • Flatten the top with a plane or a router sled, which is the real fix for a solid top.
  • Replace the sacrificial layer, which is the cheap fix if the twist lives in that layer.
  • Rebuild the base, if the frame itself has racked out of square.

Get the machine tables into one plane

An outfeed table higher than the saw table lifts the work into the blade. Lower, and the board drops as it leaves. Both cause bad cuts, and the first is genuinely dangerous.

Set every support surface to the same reference height, then check with a straightedge spanning both. Do it again after moving anything on casters, because a mobile base on an uneven slab does not return to the same height.

Set height from your body

Handplaning wants a lower bench so your weight is over the tool. Assembly, joinery layout and finishing want something closer to elbow height. If you only have one surface, favor the work you do most and use a raised platform for the other.

A bench that is too low is a back injury delivered slowly. A bench that is too high makes handwork feel like it needs force, which is how control is lost.

Do not do hot work on the assembly bench

Welding, brazing, soldering and grinding all throw sparks, and a bench covered in sawdust and finish rags is the worst possible surface for them. The federal rule on welding, cutting and brazing requires combustibles to be moved away or protected, fire watch arrangements where that is not possible, and attention to where sparks can travel and lodge.

Employers carry that duty rather than a hobbyist. The practice belongs in a home shop unchanged: hot work gets its own surface, or the surface gets cleared and covered first, and nothing flammable stays nearby.

Finishing on the bench has its own cost

Solvent finishes contaminate a surface you later glue on, and the vapor is a health question rather than a housekeeping one. OSHA's solvents standards page lists the rules covering solvent exposure, ventilation and hazard communication in workplaces, which is a reasonable reference point for deciding how much ventilation your finishing corner actually needs.

The practical answer for one bench: finish last in the session, cover the top, ventilate to outside, and clean before the next glue-up.
