5 things about home workshop makeovers worth your time

Home workshop makeovers comparison: assess the base, set bench height, plan a temporary surface, protect the top, and choose plywood over glass.

What to take away

  • Most benches worth keeping need a new top, not a new bench. The base is usually the part that has aged well.
  • Decide the height before anything else, because it has to agree with your new machine tables.
  • You need a temporary surface during the makeover. Plan it, or the new bench becomes the site table.
  • Glass work surfaces are a poor choice in a shop, and there is a documented reason beyond the obvious.

A makeover is the natural moment to fix the bench, and also the moment when a good base gets thrown out with a tired top. The bench looks worst when the room around it looks best, which is exactly when the decision gets made emotionally. Judge the base and the top separately, because they usually need different answers.

Replace, resurface or keep

Best answer

Base rigid, top scarred
Resurface
Base racks, top sound
Rebuild the base, keep the top
Both tired, height wrong
Replace
Everything fine, layout changed
Keep and add casters

Why

Base rigid, top scarred
Rigidity is the expensive part to build
Base racks, top sound
Bracing or a new frame is cheap
Both tired, height wrong
You are rebuilding it anyway
Everything fine, layout changed
Mobility solves layout, not condition

Test the base by pushing hard at working height. Movement in the frame is the deciding factor, not how the top looks.

Replace, resurface or keep?

Base rigid, top scarred -> Resurface

Yes

Base racks, top sound -> Rebuild base, keep top

No

Both tired, height wrong -> Replace

Get the heights to agree

A makeover changes machine positions, so set every work surface to one reference height. For an outfeed surface, measure the saw table height from the floor, subtract the new top thickness and caster height to set the leg length, then check the finished surface with a straightedge spanning both. An outfeed surface that does not agree with the saw table is worse than no outfeed surface at all.

Decide this before you build anything, because it determines leg length, caster height and the thickness of a new top.

Plan the temporary surface

You will need somewhere to work during the makeover, and if you do not plan it, the new bench becomes the paint table on day two. Sawhorses with an old sheet on top are enough. Keep them out of the room being worked on.

Protect any finished surface you intend to keep. A sheet of hardboard screwed down through the sacrificial layer costs almost nothing and prevents the damage that happens between phases. A beginner workshop makeover kit should start with layout and marking tools before any power tool purchase.

Stripping an old top is a chemical job

The federal standard for methylene chloride—OSHA's Methylene Chloride standard at 29 CFR 1910.1052—sets exposure limits, monitoring, respiratory protection and regulated area requirements for workplaces where the solvent is used, and lists the acute and chronic effects driving those controls.

It does not regulate a homeowner refinishing a bench, and it does explain why enclosed spaces are the dangerous case. Read the product label, work outdoors where you can, and treat a closed garage as the wrong place. In many cases planing or sanding a top flat is both quicker and safer than stripping it.

Glass is a poor shop surface

It appears in makeover photographs because it looks clean. Beyond the obvious problem of dropped tools, tempered glass furniture can break unexpectedly. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has published a tempered glass safety alert describing spontaneous breakage in glass furniture and what consumers should watch for.

In a room where things get dropped and clamped, choose a material that fails predictably instead. Plywood is a practical alternative for a general-purpose bench top.

Our makeover overview covers the project as a whole, and our guide to correcting work surface errors covers checking the result.

Common questions

Can I resurface a bench without removing the old top?
Often yes, by screwing a new layer over it. Check the height change against your machines.
Is it worth flattening an old top?
If it is thick enough to lose a few millimeters, yes. A router sled makes it straightforward.
What is the cheapest temporary bench?
Sawhorses and a sheet you do not care about. Keep it out of the room being finished.
Should the new top be finished before installation?
Finish it before fitting hardware, and leave it to cure fully before you work on it.
