Cause one: copying an image instead of a plan

A photograph of a shop shows where things are. It does not show the eight feet of clearance behind the saw, the circuit the collector runs on, or the fact that the owner works with the door open. People copy the arrangement, inherit none of the conditions, and end up with a room that looks right and works badly.

The fix is to copy dimensions, not compositions. Ask what each machine needs in front of it and behind it, then draw that on your own floor.

Cause two: buying before measuring

The order that produces most regret is purchase, then delivery, then discovering the doorway, the circuit or the clearance. Every one of those is a five-minute check done in advance.

Three measurements answer most of it: the route in, the clear floor the machine needs while working, and what it will be plugged into. If any of the three is unknown, that is the thing to resolve first.

Cause three: deferring the boring work

Circuits, lighting, extraction and a flat surface are unglamorous, and they are the constraints everything else must obey. Deferred, they force compromises into every later decision, and undoing them means moving benches and cabinets that are already built.

The pattern is easy to spot in your own plan. If a purchase requires you to say you will sort the power out later, that is the purchase to postpone.

Cause four: assuming competence transfers

Confidence with hand tools does not transfer to machines, and confidence with machines does not transfer to electrical work. Workplaces do not assume it either. The federal rule on electrical safety training requires that people who face a risk of electric shock be trained in the safety practices relevant to their work, with the depth of training matched to the risk.

That obligation belongs to employers. At home it should be read as a prompt: name the thing you are about to do, and ask honestly whether anyone has ever shown you how. If not, that is a class, a hired professional, or a job you do not do.

Cause five: no plan for the bad day

Most setups are designed only for the good day. Then something catches fire, a machine will not stop, or someone is injured, and it turns out the exit was blocked and the extinguisher was behind the thing that was burning.

The questions do apply: how do you get out, what do you do first, and who else in the house needs to know.
