How Many Outlets Does a Garage Workshop Actually Need?
Garage workshop outlets are a circuit question before they are a count. Plan two 20-amp circuits, buy the bench run first, and skip 240V until a tool demands it.

Garage workshops run out of amps long before they run out of receptacles. How many outlets in a garage workshop has no fixed answer, because the count follows the load, and the load is set by the tools you run at the same time.
The National Electrical Code sets a minimum for garages, and NFPA 70 states it plainly: at least one 20-ampere branch circuit for garage receptacles. One circuit is where most home shops start, and usually where they stall.

Running a 15-amp table saw and a shop vac on one 15-amp circuit trips the breaker mid-cut, and a bound blade throws stock. The quieter failure is the extension cord. What you actually need
Buy the bench circuit before you buy a single power tool. Many contractor table saws list 13 to 15 amps on the nameplate, and a shop vac adds 8 to 12. Put those on one 15-amp circuit and you are gambling on every rip cut. Twelve-gauge wire on a 20-amp breaker gives you the headroom.

Space a duplex receptacle every 4 to 6 feet of bench wall so no cord crosses a walkway. Cords that stretch across a floor are among the setup mistakes that make a small shop feel cramped.

A 240-volt circuit for a welder, a subpanel, and overhead cord reels can all wait. So can outlets on the far wall of a two-car garage when you work in one bay. What to buy used

What never pays back

How to tell when to upgrade
Do the arithmetic on load rather than on square footage.
- Add the nameplate amps of the tools you run at the same time.
- Compare the total with the 80 percent rule: 12 amps on a 15-amp circuit, 16 amps on a 20-amp circuit.
- If the same breaker trips twice in one weekend, stop planning and call an electrician.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for a table saw? Not on its own. A 20-amp bench circuit handles most contractor saws, but the dust collection should run on the second circuit.
