The checking kit that catches setup mistakes early

This is not a kit for making things. It is a kit for finding out whether what you made, bought or inherited is actually right. It is also small and cheap next to any machine, which is the argument for buying it early rather than after the first project comes out twisted.

The measuring half

  • One reference combination square, checked against a known straight edge and kept for reference only.
  • A long aluminum or steel straightedge, for flatness across a benchtop or a machine table.
  • Feeler gauges, for measuring the gap the straightedge shows instead of guessing at it.
  • A spirit level long enough to span a bench, and a short torpedo level for machine tables.
  • A moisture meter, if you buy rough stock, because wood movement causes failures that look like bad joinery.
  • A dial indicator with a base, if you own stationary machines and want to align them properly.

Buy the square once and well. If it is wrong, everything it checks is wrong in the same direction and you will never notice.

The electrical half

A garage shop gets new loads added to old wiring, and the checks are quick:

These tell you about the outlets. They do not qualify you to change wiring, and they are not a substitute for an electrician.

Testing that something is dead

The habit worth learning is verification. The federal rule on selection and use of electrical work practices requires that circuits be deenergised before work where practicable, that they be treated as live until verified otherwise, and that the test instrument itself be checked before and after use on a known live source.

That last part is the detail people skip. A tester that failed silently reads dead on everything. Employers carry these duties, not homeowners, and the practice is worth adopting whatever the address.

Know what wiring you have

Homes built in a particular period may contain aluminum branch circuit wiring, which behaves differently at connections and has been the subject of consumer safety guidance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's material on repairing aluminum wiring describes the hazard at terminations and the repair approaches considered acceptable.

If your garage has it, adding a heavy new load is not a job to improvise. Find out first, then ask an electrician what your options are.

Use the kit on a schedule

Check the bench for flat, the machine tables for coplanar and square, the outlets for wiring faults, and the moisture content of stock before you mill it. Once a season is enough for most of it, plus whenever something changes.

Common questions

How do I check a square is actually square? Scribe a line against it on a straight edge, flip it, and scribe again. Any divergence is double the error.

Is a dial indicator worth it without machines? No. It earns its place only once you have machine tables to align.

Does a receptacle tester prove a circuit is safe? It proves specific faults are absent. It says nothing about circuit capacity or hidden damage.

How accurate does a moisture meter need to be? Repeatable matters more than accurate. You are watching for change rather than a certified number.
