Maker tool systems compared: price is the wrong place to start
Compare maker tool systems by battery platform, track saw rail and dust port, and see how Milwaukee, Makita, Festool and DeWalt lock you in.

Maker tool systems lock you in through four interfaces: the battery platform, the guide rail, the case range and the dust port. Count the cost of leaving a system, not the cost of joining it.
Each one is a contract with a brand, and the brands write different terms. A spare pack you can buy anywhere matters more than a saw that costs $50 less.

Milwaukee M18 XC 5.0Ah packs typically run $90 to $130 each, or about $199 for a two-pack. They fit every M18 tool, from the M18 FUEL 2830-20 circular saw to the 2831-20 plunge track saw.
Makita LXT matches Milwaukee on breadth and is the platform most likely to have an adaptor for a tool Makita does not make. LXT 5.0Ah packs list at roughly $100 to $130 each, and two of them drive 36V tools such as the XSH06 circular saw.
DeWalt 20V MAX covers the same ground with the FlexVolt twist: those packs run at 60V in high-draw tools and 20V in the rest. A DCB609 9.0Ah FlexVolt pack typically costs $150 to $200 and runs the DCS520 track saw.
Bosch Professional and Metabo HPT sit a step behind on range but sell into trades that need one tool done properly. Ryobi ONE+ is the cheapest way into a full cordless bench, and its honest limit is duty cycle. Ryobi 4.0Ah packs typically run $50 to $80.

Track saw rails do not interchange
Festool and Makita own the track saw category. A Festool TS 55 FEBQ rides a Festool FS rail; a Makita SP6000J rides a Makita rail. The profiles look close and are not, so the rail you buy first decides the saw you buy second.
A Festool TS 55 FEBQ typically costs $700 to $800, and an FS 1400/2 rail runs $150 to $200. A Makita SP6000J typically costs $400 to $500, and a 55-inch Makita rail runs $110 to $150.
DeWalt and Milwaukee both sell track-compatible saws, and both expect you to buy their rail. The DeWalt DCS520 takes a 59-inch DeWalt track; the Milwaukee 2831-20 takes Milwaukee's own rail. For a home shop breaking down sheet goods, one rail and one saw is the whole system.
Cases and racking
Milwaukee Packout, DeWalt TSTAK and ToughSystem, Makita Makpac and Festool Systainer all use a proprietary footprint and latch. Packout is the deepest range and the one most likely to have a mounting plate for your van or wall.
A Packout rolling tool box typically costs $150 to $200, and a TSTAK two-drawer unit runs $60 to $90. Systainer is the one other brands license, which makes it the closest thing to a standard. A Tanos Systainer3 M 237 typically costs $100 to $140.
Cases are the shallowest lock-in of the four. A shelf and a label solve most of it.
Dust ports and hose fit
Festool and Makita extractors use 27mm and 35mm ports, and Bosch and Makita sell stepped adaptors that cover most tools. Those adaptor kits typically cost $20 to $35.
Festool's CT 15 and Makita's VC4210L ship with both the 27mm and 35mm fittings. DeWalt's DWV010 and Milwaukee's 8960-20 use their own hose sizes, so a mixed bench needs an adaptor at every join.
Compare extractors by port and hose fit across the tools you already own, not by airflow figures on the box. A hose that will not stay on a sander is a hose you stop using.
Upkeep is where brands separate
Ask three questions before joining any platform:
- Are wear parts sold separately, or only as an assembly?
- How long are spares supported after a model is discontinued?
- Can you fit the part, or does it need a service center?
Festool and Makita publish parts diagrams and sell individual components. Milwaukee's eService and DeWalt's service network sell parts too, though not every tool has a published diagram. Harbor Freight's Bauer line sells assemblies only, so a worn bearing retires a working tool.

Batteries carry a real hazard record
Lithium-ion cells are the part of a tool system with a documented fire history. The most detailed public work comes from a related category: the Consumer Product Safety Commission's micromobility safety center covers e-bikes and scooters, where lithium-ion fires have been investigated closely.
What carries over is the pattern: damaged, off-brand or badly charged cells are where failures cluster, and they are fast and hot.
Chargers are a permanent electrical arrangement
A charging station is fixed wiring whether or not you planned it that way. The construction rule on wiring methods, components and equipment covers temporary wiring and protection of conductors from damage.
That rule binds employers on job sites, not you at home, and it names the failure modes: cords used as fixed wiring, damaged insulation, unprotected runs. Give chargers their own outlet on a hard, non-combustible surface, in sight.
Any new circuit is a job for a licensed electrician working to NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, and the local authority having jurisdiction.
Common questions
Should I run two battery platforms?
Only if one covers a capability the other genuinely lacks, such as a 60V saw or a tool only one brand makes. Otherwise you buy two chargers and two sets of packs for the same work. A second platform typically adds $150 to $250 in packs and a charger before you cut anything.
A typical M18 or LXT charger alone runs $50 to $100.
Are third-party batteries a false economy?
They vary widely and are where reported failures concentrate. Some use recycled cells with no protection board. Treat them as a risk you are choosing, not a saving.
Is a track saw a table saw replacement?
For breaking down sheet goods, largely yes, and it needs less floor space. For repeat narrow rips at a fence, no, and the table saw stays.
