How to photograph and document a shop ventilation build

Documenting a workshop ventilation build so it can be repaired and repeated: photograph the runs before they close, and never stage a bad respirator fit.

Ventilation is the part of a shop that gets built once and then hidden. A photographic record is worth more here than anywhere else in the workshop, because you cannot see the system once the walls and cabinets go back, and because the failures are gradual rather than obvious. A leak that halves your capture looks exactly like a system that is working.

Photograph what will be hidden

Before anything is closed in, shoot the duct route from two angles per section, with a tape or a ruler in frame for scale. Capture the joints, the gate positions, the supports and any transition in size. Include the wall behind, so you know what the fixings went into.

Do the same for the electrical work that serves the system. A photograph of a run before it is covered is the difference between a repair and a demolition.

Make invisible airflow visible

Air does not photograph. Its effects do. Three practical methods:

  • Tape a light ribbon or a strip of tissue at the hood mouth and photograph it under working conditions.
  • Photograph the filter surface before and after a session, in the same light, to show loading.
  • Photograph the settled dust on a shelf across the room, which is the honest measure of what escaped.

Keep the camera position identical between before and after shots. A comparison only means something if the frame is the same.

Do not publish a bad respirator fit

This is the single most copied mistake in shop photography. A respirator only works if it seals against skin, which is why the federal respiratory protection standard sets out fit testing, requires a user seal check before each use, and states that facial hair coming between the sealing surface and the face is not acceptable. Those duties fall on employers, and the physics does not care who is in the room.

If you photograph yourself in a respirator, wear it correctly or crop it out. The same goes for eye protection pushed onto a forehead.

Show what the system does not cover

An honest write-up says what was not solved. Most home systems capture well at one or two machines and poorly everywhere else. Say which machines are connected, which are not, and what you do instead when using the unconnected ones.

If you cite requirements, cite them accurately. OSHA's ventilation standards page collects the rules that apply to ventilation in different operations, and it is a better reference to point readers at than a paraphrase of a figure you half remember.

Build a record that survives

Keep the photographs with a plan sketch, the gate numbering, the filter part numbers and the dates. Store it somewhere that is not only your phone.

Common questions

What should I photograph first? The empty wall, before any duct or cabinet goes up. It is the picture you will want most.

How do I show suction in a photograph? With a light tell-tale at the port and a fixed camera position, so the same frame shows the difference.

Is video better than stills for this? For airflow, yes. For a repair record, stills with scale in the frame are easier to use.

Should I publish my duct sizes? Publish them as what you did, not as a recommendation. Sizing is an engineering question specific to the setup.
