Ventilation equipment compared for first-time buyers
Comparing shop vacuums, dust collectors, cyclones, air cleaners and respirators: what each one is for, and how to read the claims printed on the box.

- Buy for the port you need to serve. A small high-suction machine and a large high-volume one solve opposite problems.
- Filtration rating matters more than motor size. A powerful collector with a coarse bag returns the finest dust straight to the room.
- Marketing figures are measured at the machine, not at the end of your hose. Expect less at the tool.

The category confusion here costs beginners more money than anywhere else in the shop, because the machines look similar, are sold in the same aisle and are described with overlapping language. Sorting out what each one is actually for prevents most of it, and usually reduces what you need to buy rather than increasing it.

Most home shops need a vacuum and one collector, then an air cleaner much later. Buying the air cleaner first is a common and expensive inversion.
How to read the claims
Airflow ratings are usually quoted at the machine inlet with nothing attached. Add a hose, a bend, a blast gate and a machine port, and the figure at the tool is lower. Compare products on the same basis, and treat any number without a stated test condition as marketing.
Filtration claims deserve the same skepticism. Ask what size particle the filter is rated to capture and at what efficiency, and whether that rating applies to the filter alone or to the assembled machine with its seals.
What the standards actually cover
If you want to know which rules govern wood dust rather than what a manufacturer says about it, OSHA's wood dust standards page lists the applicable requirements, covering ventilation, respiratory protection and hazard communication. Those obligations fall on employers rather than on someone in their own garage, and the page is still the quickest way to see the shape of the problem.
Exposure limits are not a target
You will find published exposure limits quoted in equipment marketing. Read them carefully before relying on them. OSHA publishes annotated tables of permissible exposure limits alongside other recommended limits, and notes that many of its own limits are outdated and may not be protective. That is an unusual admission from a regulator and a useful one.
The practical consequence for a home shop is simple. Do not aim at a number. Aim at capturing dust at the source, keeping the room clean, and wearing protection when neither is complete.
A buying order that works
- A shop vacuum with a fine filter and a hose that fits your sanders.
- A collector sized for the largest port on the machine you use most.
- A separator ahead of the filter, which extends filter life dramatically.
- A fitted respirator you find comfortable enough to wear.
- An air cleaner, last, once capture is working.

Common questions
Can one machine do everything? No. Suction and volume are different, and no single machine is good at both.
Is a cyclone worth the money? For anyone using a planer or jointer, yes. It keeps the filter working and saves bags.
Do air cleaners help with solvent fumes? Not unless they carry appropriate gas-phase filtration. Particle filters do nothing for vapor.
Are cheap collectors a false economy? Often, because the filter is the part that gets cheapened. Check the filter before the motor.
