What the two motors actually do differently
A brushed motor switches current through carbon blocks riding on a spinning commutator. That contact is cheap to build and simple to control. It also wears. The brushes shed carbon, throw small sparks, and add heat and noise to the tool.
A brushless motor replaces that sliding contact with a circuit board and position sensors that switch the windings electronically. Nothing rubs, so runtime per charge improves, and the same pack lasts longer between charges.
In comparable 18V tools on the same battery, a 10 to 20 percent runtime gain is a fair illustrative range rather than a promise printed on a box. Brushless tools also run cooler, sound quieter, and make no carbon dust at all.

The motor is one line of that table. In daily use it sits below the chuck, the clutch, and the pack you already own. Bits are a separate matter, and keeping SAE and metric organizing nuts and bolts apart does more for a US bench than a faster motor will.
Where each one wins
Brushless is the sensible buy for repeat work: deck screws, long runs into hardwood, and hammer drilling. Deck work and framing days are where the charge meter stops being a nuisance. It is also the quieter tool, which matters when the bench shares a wall with a bedroom.
Brushed suits the drill that comes out to hang a shelf or drive six screws into a stud. A kit with two brushed drills often costs less than one brushless bare tool, and both use the same packs.
In 12V tools the motor question fades further, because the work is light and the packs are small. Hours decide more than the badge: a drill run twenty minutes a week will outlive its owner in brushed form, while one run two hours a day will not.
Hammer drilling into a slab is the clearest case for brushless. Boring holes to anchor a workbench to a garage floor heats a motor and drains a pack, and the brushless version holds its pace to the last hole.
Battery platform math in American stores
20V Max is a marketing figure. Those packs hold five lithium cells in series at 18 volts nominal, and 20 volts is the peak rather than the working voltage. The 12V lines work the same way at 10.8 volts nominal.
Packs rarely cross between voltage lines inside one brand, and the adapters sold online are usually unofficial. A bare tool only saves money if you already own the charger and two packs. Sale prices move the gap between brands more than motor type does.
A light or a fan on the same pack earns its keep more than a few percent of runtime ever will.
Garage circuits are often shared with door openers, freezers, and lights, and an electrical outlet in a garage is not always on a dedicated circuit. Charging four packs at once on one 15-amp branch is where a shop plan starts.
What neither motor solves
Neither motor fixes a plastic chuck that slips under load, a clutch with vague detents, or a low-capacity pack. A cheap brushless drill on a 1.5Ah battery feels worse in the hand than a brushed drill on a 4Ah pack.
Neither type makes a dull bit cut faster, and neither one changes the layout work that decides whether a shelf lands level.
Motor choice is a runtime decision. Chuck, clutch, and pack are the handling decisions, and they outrank it.
Where the dust goes is a separate system, and it is the one that gets ignored until a finish coat shows every particle. Neither motor removes the dust the work makes.
